LINDSEY | MISSISSIPPI

STORY UPDATE

[original story posted 3-25-22]

A little over a year ago, Lindsey was one of the first parents to share her family’s story for Parents Behind The Pinwheels. Since then, her son, Cohen, has received the correct diagnosis for a medical condition that was tragically misdiagnosed as abuse:

“For nearly 6 months we battled the courts as ‘child abusers’. By the grace of God, our story had a happier ending. Other families in our shoes go years without contact with their children or are even sitting in jail for abuse they didn’t commit. All because ONE doctor failed to look deeper into the child’s medical history.

If it wasn’t for St. Jude and our pediatrician, we might not have ever had answers as to why Cohen had a spontaneous brain bleed, but because these doctors chose to dig deeper instead of jumping to conclusions as the child abuse pediatrician did, we have answers. And for that I’m forever grateful.

Cohen was diagnosed with ITP and ‘bleeding disorder: unspecified.’ He has been following up with St. Jude over the past year for treatment. We are SO thankful to finally have some of our ‘whys’ answered.

The trauma is real and hard for all of us. I get nervous every time we step foot in a doctors office or hospital. My four year old has extreme separation anxiety and the trauma has been the hardest on her.

Today, I’m thankful for a Savior that walks beside us even on our darkest days. I pray daily for the thousands of other families that are and have been in our shoes. I pray for desperately needed reform of this incredibly broken system. I pray that our story reaches those that need to hear it and brings them hope that there is good on the other side waiting for them. I truly pray that if you’re reading this, you never have to experience what my family, and thousands of others have. I’ll never stop speaking out about this horrific incident that changed our family forever.”
